Memorial Day and Memorial Weekend offer the chance to pay tribute to all those who have passed away in service of their country. Across the USA, there are events and memorials to commemorate military members who have died in service, but also to celebrate their lives and what they have all given for their country.
Chances are you will be looking to make the most of this public holiday and enjoy the community spirit. There are many attractions and businesses all over America who use this event as an opportunity to give back and, as such, there are military discounts available to all retired military personnel for things happening on Memorial Day and the days before. Some even extend their offers to the whole of the month, with May being known to many as ‘Military Appreciation Month.’
Some of the businesses taking part in the Memorial Day discounts include.
SeaWorld – The legendary underwater attraction gives a free single day pass to active members and as many as three dependents and also additional offers for military veterans which can be accessed via the ID.me service. You can attend one of their parks in Orlando, San Antonio, or San Diego for an incredible day out full of shows, amazing creatures, and exhibitions. This is a great way to spend time with family.
Legoland – The Legoland attraction in Florida is absolutely huge and features everything from rides to shows and even a themed hotel. A place where dreams come true for kids, and lots of adults, too! The discount for military veterans is 10% which can be applied at the gate and can even be used on the amazing Legoland Hotel if you are planning a stay, great if you don’t live nearby and need accommodation too.
Valleyfair – Valleyfair has gone all out. This amazing amusement park featuring some of the best rollercoasters in the whole of the US are providing free admission for active and veteran military personnel not only on Memorial Day but for the whole of Memorial Day weekend. On top of this, you can buy tickets for up to six members of your family and pay just $35 for each (not including tax). Valleyfair says it is just their way of thanking our military heroes. Many of the offers and discounts that companies offer give more preference to those currently serving but Valleyfair has rewarded our veterans to the same extent.
Birmingham Zoo – If you live nearby, or even if you’re willing to travel, Birmingham can be the perfect way to spend a day with the family. They are offering free admission for any retired military personnel who can prove their service, whether they are active or retired. This zoo is worth traveling for if you don’t live close as it is absolutely huge and has a wide selection of animals, shows, and other attractions. It has over 600,000 visitors each year who flock to the Zoo to see their 900 animals from six different continents, including endangered species that are a part of their conservation efforts.
Oregon Zoo – Another zoo, this time in Portland, Oregon, which is offering veterans free entry. They boast over 1.6 million visits yearly and a wide range of species including endangered creatures from around the world.
Blue Star Theatres – Blue Star is a program whereby theaters and museums sign up to reward veterans and active military staff with discounts. Many theaters across the USA (you can find one near you here) are offering free or heavily discounted tickets to veterans and their family. If you are looking for a simple day out watching a movie then there are over 136 in the States which are a part of this program.
Colonial Williamsburg – One of the more traditional ways to spend Memorial Day. Of course, admission is free to all military including retirees, reservists, and veterans. The march and commemorative ceremony are held on 28th, but the entry is free all Memorial Day weekend and includes many chances to show your respects. Williamsburg is an amazing place to go and celebrate your nation’s past and is a great place to take family members. The entry is also free for any immediate dependents you may have.
Worlds of Fun – Worlds of Fun amusement park and the attached Oceans of Fun water park are another incredible day out for the family. On four days throughout the year (one of which being Memorial Day, of course) they offer free entry for the military, with an option of buying six more tickets at a discounted rate for immediate family. With long opening hours and things to do whether you are a thrillseeker or prefer a tame day out, this is a great choice for taking the whole family.
Texas de Brazil – This is one of the restaurant chains to take their military seriously and are providing an amazing 50% off on Memorial Day for parties of up to eight people, just bring ID and proof that you are a military veteran for your discount on a meal. Many restaurants that aren’t chains will also be providing these sorts of discounts—so keep an eye out or search locally for Memorial Day deals if you aren’t lucky enough to live near a Texas de Brazil location.
Celebrating the military and those who have served their country is something that many companies do all year round with some brilliant discounts. Many retailers offer 10% off all year round, but on Memorial Day and the holiday weekend around it will create additional discounts as a way of saying thank you.
This is a brilliant American tradition, and as well as all of the companies and attractions we’ve mentioned above, there are likely to be many other smaller businesses in your local towns and cities offering more discounts. You can search online for local events celebrating this brilliant holiday weekend. Even if it isn’t clearly advertised, it is always worth calling before you visit somewhere or having a look at their website to see what they are offering veterans.
